Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), was setup in the year 1940 by the late Walchand Hirachand in association with the Government of Mysore. HAL has produced the bulk of the fighters, medium and light transports, helicopters and trainers required by the IAF, Earlier programmes that included production of the MiG-21 at Nasik and Maruts, Gnats and Ajeets at Bangalore then gave way to permit HAL to handle the MiG-27 and the jaguar at these two centres, respectively, while work continued on the Kiran II armed trainer at Bangalore but the HPT-32 is being phased out at Kanpur.

The Helicopter Division has produced nearly 600 helicopters (under French licence) and is now preparing for the exciting future centering around is Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).
The Kanpur Division has been fully engaged in manufacture of the Dornier 228 light transport aircraft, a number of variants produced for six different operators primarily the Indian Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force.
