Indian equities ended lower on Tuesday erasing earlier gains. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 227.80 or 0.68% at 33,227.99 with 22 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 82.10 or 0.80% at 10,240.15 with 40 components posting drop.
Major losers in the 30-share index were Coal India (2.45%), Cipla (2.05%), Hero Motocorp (1.98%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.58%), and Tata Steel (1.54%).
On the other hand, Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (2.83%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (2.46%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.26%), Infosys (0.76%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.21%), and Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.21%) were the major gainers in the Sensex.
Market breadth was negative with 890 advances against 1,552 declines.
Petronet LNG topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 3,198.25 million. It was followed by Fortis Healthcare (Rs. 1,860.63 million), Tata Motors (Rs. 570.70 million) and Reliance Industries (Rs. 490.02 million).
The volume chart was led by Fortis Healthcare with trades of over 14.52 million shares. It was followed by Petronet LNG (12.73 million), Gammon Infrastructure Projects (3.69 million) and Suzlon Energy (3.57 million).
