Sensex ends 792 points lower; Nifty settles at 10,316-level

Indian markets ended lower on Friday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2018-19 decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.5 per cent.

At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 792.17 or 2.25% at 34,376.99 with 25 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 282.80 or 2.67% at 10,316.45 with 45 components registering drop.

Major losers in the 30-share index were Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (15.93%), Reliance Industries (6.31%), Tata Power Company (5.90%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (5.36%), State Bank Of India (4.73%), and Bharti Airtel (4.27%).

On the other hand, Infosys (2.19%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.88%), and HDFC Bank (0.10%) were the major gainers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 667 advances against 1,735 declines.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,428.00 million. It was followed by Reliance Industries (Rs. 1,222.53 million), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (Rs. 974.63 million) and Cipla (Rs. 759.34 million).

The volume chart was led by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation with trades of over 8.65 million shares. It was followed by Essar Steel (6.44 million), HDFC FMP - 3360 D - March 2014 (1) - Series 30 - Regular Plan - Quarterly Dividend (5.00 million) and ICICI Prudential Business Cycle Fund Series 1 - Regular Plan - Dividend (5.00 million).
