Samvat 2071 commenced on a cheerful note with the BSE benchmark Sensex rising by over 100 points in the opening session of 'Muhurat' trading today.
At 6.30 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 102.28 points or 0.38% at 26,889. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lhigher by 68.15 points or 0.86% at 7,995.90.
Muhurat, according to the Hindu lexicon, means ‘an auspicious time’ decided by planetary movements. Trading in the stock market on Diwali day at a specific Muhurat time is hence believed to bring prosperity and wealth for the year ahead.
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bajaj Auto (0.96%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.90%), Reliance Industries (0.81%), Larsen & Toubro (0.67%), Hindalco Industries (0.61%), and I T C (0.52%).
On the other hand, Wipro (3.63%), Tata Motors (0.47%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.45%), Sesa Sterlite (0.40%), Maruti Suzuki India (0.31%), and G A I L (India) (0.04%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.01% and 1.25% respectively.
The Oil & Gas index was at 10,802.72, up by 78.14 points or by 0.73%. The Capital Goods index was at 15,147.85, up by 91.35 points or by 0.61%. The HC index was at 13,916.99, up by 74.16 points or by 0.54%. The Consumer Durables index was at 9,663.96, up by 48.22 points or by 0.50%.
