Indian markets settled sharply lower on expiry day. Power, banking and consumer durables stocks witnessed a fall.
At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined 192.45 points or 0.74% at 25,894.97 with 25 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 71.80 points or 0.92% at 7,719.60 with 45 components posting drop.
Major losers were NTPC (3.01%), Axis Bank (2.52%), HDFC (2%) and M&M (1.73%).
Top gainers were Cipla (1.92%), Tata Steel (1.56%), Coal India (0.49%), and Gail India (0.17%).
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.18% and 0.25% respectively.
The Power index was at 2,133.55, down by 29.19 points or by 1.35%. The Bankex index was at 17,485.61, down by 208.9 points or by 1.18%. The Consumer Durables index was at 8,556.87, down by 84.71 points or by 0.98%.
