Sensex gains 78 points in early trade; Tata Motors up, TCS down

Indian equities are trading on positive note on Thursday. At 9.22 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 77.98 points or 0.35% at 22,355.21 with 23 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 23.75 points or 0.36% at 6,699.05 with 41 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 50.53 points or 0.23% at 22,327.76.

Sensex Movers

Reliance Industries contributed rise of 13.74 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (12.99 points), I T C (12.84 points), Infosys (10.51 points) and Tata Motors (10.32 points).

However, H D F C Bank contributed fall of 17.88 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (13.5 points), Larsen & Toubro (5.74 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.49 points) and ACC (0.62 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (1.40%), Wipro (1.24%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.09%), G A I L (India) (1.06%), Hindalco Industries (0.89%), and Bharti Airtel (0.87%).

On the other hand, Tata Consultancy Services (1.15%), H D F C Bank (1.01%), Larsen & Toubro (0.51%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.25%), Bajaj Auto (0.04%), and Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (0.01%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.38% and 0.54% respectively.

The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were A B G Shipyard (1.54%), Aban Offshore (1.23%), Alstom India (1.17%), A I A Engineering (0.32%) and CORE Education and Technologies (0.08%).

The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Advanta (3.1%), Trident (1.95%), Action Construction Equipment (1.72%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.42%) and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.37%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,466.10, up by 13.85 points or by 0.95%. The major gainers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.82%), Anant Raj (2.27%), Indiabulls Real Estate (1.42%), D L F (1.27%) and Godrej Properties (1.04%).

The Auto index was at 13,292.87, up by 95.57 points or by 0.72%. The major gainers were Exide Industries (1.65%), Ashok Leyland (1.1%), Cummins India (0.83%), Hero Motocorp (0.73%) and Bharat Forge (0.21%).

The Oil & Gas index was at 9,603.12, up by 60.00 points or by 0.63%. The major gainers were Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (1.17%), G A I L (India) (1.06%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (0.88%), Castrol India (0.6%) and Cairn India (0.07%).

On the other hand, the Capital Goods index was at 11,838.89, down by 47.14 points or by 0.4%. The major losers were Lakshmi Machine Works (100%), Alstom T&D India (100%), F A G Bearings India (100%), Larsen & Toubro (0.51%) and A B B India (0.07%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 686 advances against 181 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Tata Consultancy Services topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 140.41 million. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (Rs. 112.20 million), Multi Commodity Exchange of India (Rs. 51.77 million) and H C L Technologies (Rs. 42.61 million).

The volume chart was led by Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company with trades of over 0.48 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (0.34 million), Kingfisher Airlines (0.29 million) and Adani Enterprises (0.25 million).
