Indian markets fell in early trade on Wednesday. At 09.59 a.m., the Sensex was trading down 91.40 points or 0.47% at 19,473.52 with 21 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 30.15 points or 0.51% at 5,883.95 with 38 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 52.95 points or 0.27% at 19,511.97, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 29.30 points or 0.50%, at 5,884.80.
Infosys contributed fall of 28.7 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (21.32 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (14.77 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (11.1 points) and Tata Motors (10.35 points).
However, I T C contributed rise of 15.04 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (4.59 points), Tata Steel (4.14 points), Bharti Airtel (3.81 points) and Wipro (2.44 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (1.46%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.16%), I T C (0.79%), Wipro (0.76%), Bharti Airtel (0.76%), and Hindustan Unilever (0.43%).
On the other hand, Hindalco Industries (1.91%), Infosys (1.70%), Tata Motors (1.54%), I C I C I Bank (1.39%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.37%), and G A I L (India) (1.19%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.42% and 0.26% respectively.
The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.66%), Astrazeneca Pharma India (0.46%), Dish TV India (0.45%), Bajaj Electricals (0.23%) and Apollo Tyres (0.23%).
The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Styrolution ABS (India) (2.96%), Aegis Logistics (1.57%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.28%), Ajanta Pharma (0.5%) and Hitachi Home and Life Solutions (India) (0.23%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Consumer Durables index was at 7,263.64, up by 242.82 points or by 3.46%. The major gainers were Videocon Industries (0.61%) and Bajaj Electricals (0.23%).
The IT index was at 7,010.98, up by 91.99 points or by 1.33%. The major gainers were Financial Technologies (India) (0.78%), Wipro (0.76%), H C L Technologies (0.59%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.45%).
The TECk index was at 4,021.96, up by 52.64 points or by 1.33%. The major gainers were Deccan Chronicle Holdings (1.72%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.28%), Bharti Airtel (0.76%), Dish TV India (0.45%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.45%).
On the other hand, the FMCG index was at 5,764.04, down by 22.93 points or by 0.4%. The major losers were Tata Global Beverages (0.41%), Jubilant FoodWorks (0.27%), United Spirits (0.22%) and Godrej Consumer Products (0.16%).
Market breadth was negative with 722 advances against 1,053 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Plethico Pharmaceuticals topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 16.76 million. It was followed by Hinduja Ventures (Rs. 3.45 million), Sundaram Multi Pap (Rs. 1.02 million) and Choice Infra Ventures (Rs. 0.94 million).
The volume chart was led by Plethico Pharmaceuticals with trades of over 0.13 million shares. It was followed by Sundaram Multi Pap (0.05 million), Marksans Pharma (0.05 million) and Dhanus Technologies (0.05 million).
