Sensex trades up 40 points; ITC up, HUL down

Indian equities continues to trade higher in the post noon trade on Wednesday. At 1.02 p.m, the Sensex was trading up 39.89 points or 0.20% at 20,021.46 with 17 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 6.65 points or 0.11% at 6,055.15 with 23 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 15.47 points or 0.08% at 19,997.04, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 4.35 points or 0.07%, at 6,052.85.

Sensex Movers

I T C contributed rise of 27.42 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharti Airtel (20.6 points), H D F C Bank (16.82 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (14.45 points) and Larsen & Toubro (6.85 points).

However, Hindustan Unilever contributed fall of 30 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Motors (14.35 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (9.58 points), NTPC (3.69 points) and Tata Consultancy Services (3.37 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (3.78%), ITC (1.47%), Cipla (1.24%), H D F C Bank (1.14%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.97%), and Wipro (0.73%).

On the other hand, Hindustan Unilever (4.82%), Tata Motors (1.96%), Hindalco Industries (1.46%), Bajaj Auto (1.40%), NTPC (1.16%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.13%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts declining -0.39% and -0.24% respectively.

The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Allahabad Bank(1.75%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.98%), Aban Offshore (0.89%), A B G Shipyard (0.38%) and Alstom India (0.2%).

The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Adhunik Metaliks (3.11%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (3.06%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.71%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.32%) and Aarti Industries (0.25%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Auto index was at 11,115.24, down by 90.88 points or by 0.81%. The major losers were Bajaj Auto (1.4%), Bharat Forge (1.36%), Exide Industries (1.27%), Ashok Leyland (1.17%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.03%).

The Consumer Durables index was at 7,507.14, down by 51.16 points or by 0.68%. The major losers were Blue Star (1.78%), Titan Industries (1.12%), Bajaj Electricals (1.09%), Symphony (0.56%) and Gitanjali Gems (0.3%).

The PSU index was at 7,732.74, down by 45.99 points or by 0.59%. The major losers were Allahabad Bank(1.75%), Bank Of India (1.36%), Andhra Bank (1.15%), Bank Of Baroda (0.92%) and BEML (0.38%).

On the other hand, the TECk index was at 3,813.57, up by 17.56 points or by 0.46%. The major gainers were Bharti Airtel (3.78%), Idea Cellular (1.95%), D B Corp (0.88%), Dish TV India (0.34%) and Mphasis (0.27%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,100 advances against 1,574 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Hindustan Unilever topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 607.39 million. It was followed by Housing Development and Infrastructure (Rs. 436.95 million), Bharti Airtel (Rs. 424.92 million) and United Spirits (Rs. 298.84 million).

The volume chart was led by Manappuram Finance with trades of over 4.18 million shares. It was followed by Housing Development and Infrastructure (4.11 million), Reliance Communications (2.97 million) and Unitech (2.62 million).
