Indian rupee weakened against US dollar on Thursday. It was lower by 9 paise or 0.17% against US dollar to Rs 54.94 compared to previous close of 54.84. It was opened at Rs 54.78 against US dollar.

The Sensex lost 93.66 or 0.48% at 19,323.80 with 21 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 35.50 or 0.60% at 5,870.10 with 38 components registering drop.

In the spot market, the Dollar Index decreased 0.27% to 79.41 compared with previous close of 79.62 (06:38 ET). It was opened at 79.57.
