Asian stocks swung between gains and losses on low trading volume as U.S. budget talks appeared to stall ahead of the Christmas holiday.
Japanese benchmark index Nikkei 225 fell 99.27 points, or 0.99%, to trade at 9,940.06. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index advanced by 35.61 points, or 0.16%, to trade at 22,535.38. China's Shanghai Composite decreased 0.14 points, or 0.24% to trade at 2,156.38.
Taiwan's Taiex index rose 5.63 points, or 0.07%, to trade at 7,556.92. South Korea's Kospi index increased 3.84 points, or 0.17% to trade at 1,983.76. Singapore's Straits Times indexed advanced 1.20 points, or to 0.06% trade at 3,164.41 (07.27 a.m., IST).
