Indian markets continue to trade sluggish on Thursday noon. Power, metal and realty stocks led the decline. At 12.07 pm, the Sensex was trading down 75.53 points or 0.39% at 19,400.47 with 23 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 29.95 points or 0.51% at 5,899.65 with 42 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 35.41 points or 0.18% at 19,511.41, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 4.85 points or 0.08%, at 5,934.45.
I T C contributed fall of 16.48 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (14.32 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (8.11 points), Infosys (6.58 points) and Mahindra & Mahindra (5.17 points).
However, Hindustan Unilever contributed rise of 5.23 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (3.16 points), I C I C I Bank (2.49 points), Maruti Suzuki India (1.44 points) and Hindalco Industries (0 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Cipla (1.50%), Hindustan Unilever (0.77%), Maruti Suzuki India (0.56%), Jindal Steel & Power (0.55%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.36%), and I C I C I Bank (0.16%).
On the other hand, Sterlite Industries (India) (1.75%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.26%), Bajaj Auto (1.19%), Tata Steel (1.18%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.02%), and NTPC (0.94%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts declining-0.17% and -0.37% respectively.
The major losers in the BSE Midcap were CORE Education and Technologies (1.14%), Aban Offshore (0.84%), Allahabad Bank (0.74%), Amara Raja Batteries (0.42%) and Alstom India (0.22%).
The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Adhunik Metaliks (4.15%), Aarti Industries (1.23%), Trident (0.86%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.69%) and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.33%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Power index was at 1,975.97, down by 16.55 points or by 0.83%. The major losers were Adani Power (2.92%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.26%), Crompton Greaves (1.12%), Reliance Infrastructure (0.78%) and A B B (0.36%).
The Realty index was at 2,117.67, down by 15.46 points or by 0.72%. The major losers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.87%), Anant Raj (1.49%), Indiabulls Real Estate (1.34%), D L F (1.06%) and Godrej Properties (0.89%).
The Metal index was at 11,033.06, down by 76.26 points or by 0.69%. The major losers were NMDC (1.78%), Sesa Goa (1.67%), Bhushan Steel (1.58%), JSW Steel (0.74%) and Hindustan Zinc (0.69%).
On the other hand, the HC index was at 8,239.93, up by 41.31 points or by 0.50%. The major gainers were Aurobindo Pharma (4.01%), Divis Laboratories (1.67%), Cipla (1.5%), Biocon (1.24%) and Glaxo SmithKline Pharmaceuticals (0.86%).
Market breadth was negative with 1,076 advances against 1,448 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Axis Bank topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 556.25 million. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (Rs. 278.20 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 264.31 million) and Reliance Power (Rs. 242.42 million).
The volume chart was led by G T L Infrastructure with trades of over 40.17 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (3.96 million), Alok Industries (3.05 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (2.97 million).
