Sensex down 134 points; Mid and Small-caps outperform

Indian equities are trading lower in post noon session on Thursday ahead of FDI vote in Rajya Sabha on Friday. IT stocks dropped today after Cognizant Technology Solutions said that it expects 16% revenue growth in 2013 as against its projected 20% growth for the current year. 

At 1.53 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 133.81 points or 0.69% at 19,258.05 with 24 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 41.20 points or 0.70% at 5,859.30 with 40 components falling.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 83.23 points or 0.43% at 19,475.09, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a rise of 25.80 points or 0.44%, at 5,926.30.

Sensex Movers

Infosys contributed fall of 33.24 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (24.45 points), Tata Consultancy Services (15.63 points), Larsen & Toubro (12.51 points) and I C I C I Bank (10.81 points).

However, Tata Motors contributed rise of 6.42 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (3.55 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (3.53 points), Jaiprakash Associates (3.04 points) and Sterlite Industries (India) (2.22 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (1.15%), Tata Motors (1.05%), Bajaj Auto (1.04%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.23%), I T C (0.18%), and Maruti Suzuki India (0.05%).

On the other hand, Infosys (2.38%), Bharti Airtel (2.05%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.73%), HDFC Bank (1.57%), Cipla (1.29%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.24%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.18% and 0.11% respectively.

The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were A I A Engineering (2.89%), Allahabad Bank (1.68%), Aban Offshore (0.63%), A B G Shipyard (0.32%) and CORE Education and Technologies (0.28%).

The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.82%), Trident (0.54%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.49%), Aarti Industries (0.25%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.11%).

Sectors in Limelight

The IT index was at 5,665.22, down by 114.21 points or by 1.98%. The major losers were Hexaware Technologies (3.19%), H C L Technologies (2.66%), Infosys (2.38%), Oracle Financial Services Software (1.13%) and Tech Mahindra (0.64%).

The TECk index was at 3,424.78, down by 55.92 points or by 1.61%. The major losers were H C L Technologies (2.66%), Bharti Airtel (2.05%), Oracle Financial Services Software (1.13%), D B Corp (0.78%) and Deccan Chronicle Holdings (0.33%).

The Capital Goods index was at 11,071.80, down by 100.52 points or by 0.9%. The major losers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.9%), Crompton Greaves (0.71%), Alstom India (0.48%), A B B (0.43%) and Bharat Electronics (0.02%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,264 advances against 1,486 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Pantaloon Retail (India) topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 735.14 million. It was followed by United Spirits (Rs. 614.96 million), United Breweries (Rs. 517.21 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 501.48 million).

The volume chart was led by Spicejet with trades of over 7.70 million shares. It was followed by Moser Baer (India) (4.98 million), Unitech (4.58 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (4.52 million).
