Indian markets continue to trade on a flat note on Friday with some gains seen in teck, IT and FMCG stocks, while auto and consumer durables declined. At 11.05 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 45.71 points or 0.25% at 18,517.08 with 16 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 6.05 points or 0.11% at 5,637.05 with 22 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 20.12 points or 0.11% at 18,491.49, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 6.20 points or 0.11%, at 5,624.80.
ITC contributed rise of 25.29 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (24.9 points), Bharti Airtel (12.69 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (8.13 points) and Larsen & Toubro (5.68 points).
However, Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed fall of 14.86 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (9.18 points), Tata Motors (7.45 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (3.47 points) and Hindustan Unilever (1.9 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (3.06%), Infosys (1.87%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.69%), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (1.40%), ITC (1.37%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.18%).
On the other hand, Cipla (1.32%), Tata Motors (1.29%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.09%), Bajaj Auto (0.96%), Hindalco Industries (0.81%), and GAIL (India) (0.75%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.57% and 0.30% respectively.
The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek Auto (2.53%), Aban Offshore (1.32%), Allahabad Bank (0.85%), Alstom India (0.6%) and A B G Shipyard (0.55%).
The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (2.62%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.67%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.67%), Action Construction Equipment (0.39%) and Adhunik Metaliks (0.29%).
Sectors in Limelight
The TECk index was at 3,377.31, up by 32.96 points or by 0.99%. The major gainers were Bharti Airtel (3.06%), Idea Cellular (1.89%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.93%), Mphasis (0.48%) and Dish TV India (0.32%).
The IT index was at 5,692.84, up by 47.76 points or by 0.85%. The major gainers were Infosys (1.87%), Mphasis (0.48%), Tech Mahindra (0.42%), Hexaware Technologies (0.23%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.03%).
The FMCG index was at 5,781.84, up by 33.81 points or by 0.59%. The major gainers were ITC (1.37%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) (0.92%) and Tata Global Beverages (0.25%).
On the other hand, the Auto index was at 10,487.96, down by 70.41 points or by 0.67%. The major losers were Bharat Forge (1.49%), Ashok Leyland (1.42%), Bajaj Auto (0.96%), Cummins India (0.29%) and Exide Industries (0.15%).
Market breadth was positive with 1,266 advances against 980 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
United Spirits topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 621.80 million. It was followed by Tata Coffee (Rs. 597.32 million), L&T Finance Holdings (Rs. 407.09 million) and United Breweries (Rs. 239.84 million).
The volume chart was led by L&T Finance Holdings with trades of over 4.66 million shares. It was followed by TV18 Broadcast (4.40 million), Kingfisher Airlines (3.79 million) and Lanco Infratech (2.32 million).
