US stock markets closed lower on Wednesday, as the Federal Reserve signaled it could hike interest rates in December and the uncertain U.S. election continued to cloud the market's outlook.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 77.46 points or 0.43 percent to settle at 17,959.64. NASDAQ 100 index fell 40.03 points or 0.84 percent to close at 4,726.91. The broader S&P 500 index fell 13.78 points or 0.65 percent to end at 2,097.94.
