Sensex tanks 499 points to close below 29,200

Indian markets ended on a disappointing note on Friday led by sharp losses in banking, consumer durables and auto stocks. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 498.82 points or 1.68% at 29,182.95 with 22 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 129.75 points or 1.45% at 8,822.60 with 36 components registering drop. 

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Power Company (2.90%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.62%), NTPC (1.37%), Wipro (0.94%), Sesa Sterlite (0.67%), and G A I L (India) (0.34%).

On the other hand, State Bank Of India (5.13%), I C I C I Bank (4.95%), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (3.91%), Coal India (3.81%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (3.35%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (2.49%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap index lost 0.3% and 0.43% respectively. On sectoral front, BSE Bankex index dropped (3.14%) followed by Consumer durables (1.85%), Auto (1.21%) and Metal (0.84%).
