European stock markets settled lower on Thursday in light holiday trading ahead of the New Year.

Europe's leading Blue-chip index, EURO STOXX 50 fell 6.96 points or 0.21 percent to settle at 3,271.76. Germany's benchmark index DAX lost 23.94 points or 0.21 percent to end at 11,451.05. French benchmark index CAC 40 fell 9.54 points or 0.2 percent to end at 4,838.47.

On the other hand, UK's benchmark index FTSE 100 rose 14.18 points or 0.2 percent to close at 7,120.26.
