European stock markets closed higher on Tuesday, as investors awaited the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.

Europe's leading Blue-chip index, EURO STOXX 50 gained 14.15 points or 0.47 percent to settle at 3,023.43. UK's benchmark index FTSE 100 rose 36.23 points or 0.53 percent to close at 6,843.13.

Meanwhile, Germany's benchmark index DAX gained 25.37 points or 0.24 percent to end at 10,482.32. French benchmark index CAC 40 gained 15.68 points or 0.35 percent to end at 4,476.89.
