Indian markets ended lower on Monday. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined 265.83 or 0.84% at 31,258.85 with 25 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 83.05 or 0.84% at 9,754.35 with 43 components posting drop.
Major losers in the 30-share index were Infosys (5.37%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.74%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (2.74%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (2.42%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2.01%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.99%).
On the other hand, Axis Bank (0.70%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.34%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.22%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.15%), ITC (0.12%), and Wipro (0.09%) were the major gainers in the Sensex.
Market breadth was negative with 853 advances against 1,621 declines.
Axis Bank topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 5,895.21 million. It was followed by Infosys (Rs. 3,907.40 million), Manappuram Finance (Rs. 1,915.63 million) and Reliance Industries (Rs. 681.50 million).
The volume chart was led by Manappuram Finance with trades of over 20.26 million shares. It was followed by Axis Bank (11.93 million), Jaiprakash Associates (7.29 million) and Infosys (4.47 million).
