Sensex down near 300 points; Nifty above 10,700

Indian markets continued to decline for the third day on Thursday. At 9.29 a.m, the Sensex was trading down 280.51 points or 0.78% at 35,603.90 with 29 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 84.50 points or 0.78% at 10,698.40 with 48 components falling.

Major losers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (2.44%), Maruti Suzuki India (2.18%), Bharti Airtel (1.87%), Cipla (1.73%), ICICI Bank (1.72%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.60%).

On the other hand, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.57%), and Power Grid Corporation Of India (0.65%) were the biggest gainers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 270 advances against 808 declines.

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 216.84 million. It was followed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (Rs. 152.03 million), Housing Development Finance Corporation (Rs. 130.25 million) and HealthCare Global Enterprises (Rs. 87.09 million).

The volume chart was led by Vakrangee with trades of over 2.20 million shares. It was followed by Reliance Communications (1.65 million), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.53 million) and Jaypee Infratech (1.19 million).
