India VIX signals decrease in market volatility

Indian equities are positive in early trade on Friday due to strong global cues. At 9.46 a.m, the Sensex was trading up 293.86 points or 1.08% at 27,420.43 with 26 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 77.05 points or 0.94% at 8,236.35 with 44 components gaining.

India VIX, a volatility index, declined on Friday. It is currently trading at 13.84, down 5.15% from 14.59. It witnessed a high of 14.59 and low of 11.84 after opening at 14.59 (at 09.41 am).

Volatility Index is a measure of market's expectation of volatility over the near term. Volatility is often described as the ''rate and magnitude of changes in prices'' and in finance often referred to as risk.

India VIX is a volatility index based on the Nifty Index Option prices. From the best bid-ask prices of Nifty Options contracts, a volatility figure is calculated which indicates the expected market volatility over the next 30 calendar days.
