Sensex ends 224 points lower; Nifty settles at 11,355-level

Indian markets ended lower on Monday. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 224.33 or 0.59% at 37,644.90 with 18 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 73.75 or 0.65% at 11,355.75 with 36 components registering drop.

Biggest losers in the 30-share index were State Bank Of India (3.17%), Axis Bank (1.68%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.60%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.54%), Power Grid Corporation Of India (1.52%), and Reliance Industries (1.40%).

On the other hand, Infosys (1.75%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.65%), Wipro (1.31%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.96%), and Cipla (0.93%) were the biggest gainers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 865 advances against 1,553 declines.

R*Shares Liquid BeES topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 532.20 million. It was followed by Jet Airways (India) (Rs. 427.16 million), Infosys (Rs. 396.32 million) and Tata Steel (Rs. 307.58 million).

The volume chart was led by Jaiprakash Associates with trades of over 5.38 million shares. It was followed by Kwality (3.85 million), Farmax India (2.25 million) and Jain Irrigation Systems (1.56 million).
