Sensex ends 144 points lower; Nifty settles at 10,500

Indian markets ended lower on Wednesday erasing earlier gains. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined 144.52 or 0.42% at 34,155.95 with 21 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 38.85 or 0.37% at 10,500.90 with 42 components registering drop.

Biggest losers in the 30-share index were State Bank Of India (4.06%), Axis Bank (3.35%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.62%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2.53%), ICICI Bank (2.29%), and Tata Consultancy Services (1.94%).

On the other hand, Coal India (2.47%), Reliance Industries (1.94%), Wipro (1.77%), Bharti Airtel (1.76%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.41%), and Tata Motors (1.18%) were the biggest gainers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 1,229 advances against 1,341 declines.

State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,114.16 million. It was followed by HDFC FMP - 1132 D - February 2016 (1) - Series 35 - Direct Plan - Growth (Rs. 981.00 million), Tata Steel (Rs. 881.81 million) and Spicejet (Rs. 519.71 million).

The volume chart was led by HDFC FMP - 1132 D - February 2016 (1) - Series 35 - Direct Plan - Growth with trades of over 100.00 million shares. It was followed by Uttam Value Steels (16.20 million), Kotak FMP Series 131 - Regular Plan - Growth (15.00 million) and Unitech (8.55 million).
