Indian markets ended flat on Thursday. At the close, the 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex ended flat with a decline of 22.21 points or 0.06% at 36,351.23 with 18 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 23.35 or 0.21% at 10,957.10 with 32 components posting drop.
Major losers in the 30-share index were Kotak Mahindra Bank (3.69%), Larsen & Toubro (2.61%), Hero Motocorp (1.22%), Tata Steel (0.98%), Coal India (0.95%) and HDFC (0.91%).
On the other hand, ITC (1.71%), Bharti Airtel (1.69%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.39%), Reliance Industries (1.22%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.69%), and Axis Bank (0.59%) were the major gainers in the Sensex.
Market breadth was negative with 744 advances against 1,568 declines.
Ashok Leyland topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,013.16 million. It was followed by Lupin (Rs. 397.63 million), Jindal Steel & Power (Rs. 372.09 million) and R*Shares Liquid BeES (Rs. 323.38 million).
The volume chart was led by Ashok Leyland with trades of over 9.57 million shares. It was followed by PC Jeweller (4.54 million), Jindal Steel & Power (2.03 million) and Jain Irrigation Systems (1.54 million).
