Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) sold a total of 62,996 factory-fitted CNG vehicles in FY 2014-15, a growth of 23% over previous year. The contribution of CNG vehicles to total sales increased to 5.4%, from 4.9% in FY 2013-14.
Maruti Suzuki, the first company to introduce factory-fitted CNG cars in India in 2010, offers six dual fuel (CNG+Petrol) models namely Alto, Alto K-10, Celerio, Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga. The CNG variants of Alto K-10 and Celerio were launched in 2014-15.
CNG is a cleaner fuel and emits a negligible amount of PM10 and PM2.5.
In cities like Delhi and Mumbai where distribution infrastructure is in place and CNG for automobiles is available almost 50% sales of Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga are accounted for by the CNG variants.
Shares of the company declined Rs 15.8, or 0.43%, to settle at Rs 3,626.75. The total volume of shares traded was 21,948 at the BSE (Monday).
