The government on Friday raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 a litre each again but retail pump rates are unlikely to be affected. Excise duty on fuel was last raised on January 1 by Rs 2 each.

The excise duty hike will likely offset the retail rate reduction that was due because of slide in oil prices. Oil companies review the prices of petrol and diesel every fortnight depending on international crude prices.
